SF sorry for using Down GAA logo

SINN Fein has been forced to apologise and remove the Down GAA logo from its promotional literature.

The party's south Down branch had been using the Down county board crest on it's material - breaking the rules of the GAA which states it must be non-party political.

The Down logo - a red, black and yellow shield with a Celtic cross in the middle - has been featured in the party's South Down newsletter.

The News Letter reported yesterday that it has appeared on the Sinn Fein material for more than a year.

The GAA constitution states that "no committee, club, council or representative thereof shall take part, as such, in any party political movement".

Following an approach from the Down GAA board, Sinn Fein yesterday said it would remove the logo from their material. Down GAA secretary Sean Og McAteer said: "We have asked Sinn Fein to remove it and they have agreed and apologised".
