Row over path lighting

A ROW has erupted over plans to spend more than £100,000 on lighting for a path at Galgorm Castle.

A report was presented to Ballymena Borough Council seeking approval for the installation of safety lighting, but councillors clashed after it was revealed the lighting would cost rate-payers £106,130.

The council is responsible for the path after entering into a 20-year agreement with Galgorm Castle Estates Ltd in 2001.

The report suggests lighting should be installed at the main entrance to the golf club from Galgorm village, from the castle to the pavilion, and from the pavilion to the pedestrian entrance at Sourhill Road. Sinn Fein's Paul Maguire questioned why such a large amount of ratepayers money was needed. DUP councillor Tommy Nicholl said he believed there was "great merit" in providing the "health and safety lights". Councillors later agreed to refer the matter back to the economic and development committee.
