Former president Mary McAleese could be appointed one of the first female cardinals in history under reforms of the Catholic Church by Pope Francis who has stated he wants to increase the role of women. There is speculation the Pope might allow women to take up the post of cardinal. The Sunday Times reported yesterday that several women have already been earmarked as potential candidates. Belfast-born Mrs McAleese, pictured, who has studied canon law in Rome, is being tipped as a potential candidate.
