Mural to IRA boss Meehan

MURAL is to be unveiled in north Belfast in memory of former Ardoyne IRA commander Martin Meehan.

The former Sinn Fein councillor, pictured, who escaped from Crumlin Road prison in 1971, died suddenly of a heart condition in 2007.

A commemoration organised by his family will be held tomorrow at 2pm in Ardoyne before the mural is unveiled.

Earlier this month the unveiling of a plaque to Shankill bomber Thomas Begley in Ardoyne was criticised.

Mr Meehan's son Martin Og Meehan said tomorrow's event would be free of party-political connotations. "We wanted to make the event as inclusive as possible and make it possible for all the people of Ardoyne and beyond to attend should they wish to do so," he said. "This is simply about his family, myself, my sister Mary and brother Kevin remembering him in a way we feel is fitting."
