Murder-attempt accused said he wanted to rob women, jury told

A key prosecution witness in the trial of a man accused of trying to kill a Co Armagh student and her American friend in Chicago said he spoke of wanting to rob some women on the night of the attack.

Heriberto Viramontes (34) is on trial accused of the attempted murder of Natasha McShane, from Silverbridge, and her friend Stacy Jurich in April 2010.

Ms McShane has been left with extensive brain injuries and has struggled with her speech and mobility following the attack.

Cook County Criminal Court in Chicago heard evidence yesterday from Marcy Cruz, a prosecution witness who said she was with Mr Viramontes on the night of the attack.

Cruz told the court as the two drove in her van on Milwaukee Avenue in April 2010, Mr Viramontes "told me to look at all these white hoes, that he wanted to rob one of them".

Cruz said after she parked in an alley, Mr Viramontes told her he didn't want her involved in what he was about to do, then grabbed her boyfriend's baseball bat and left the van.

While he was away, Cruz said she smoked marijuana and listened to the radio.

Mr Viramontes returned about three minutes later with two bags and told Cruz to drive away.

"He stated that the girls were really pretty and that he did some bogus (stuff)," Cruz told the court.

Mr Viramontes took credit cards from the bags and then told Cruz to take what she wanted.

She told the court she took some Dior perfume.

Cruz, has already pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder and is serving a 22-year jail term.

The trial of Mr Viramontes is expected to last at least another week.
