New mural investigation under way

POLICE last night said they were investigating the painting of another loyalist paramilitary mural in east Belfast.

However, it remains unclear if officers will maintain a presence at the scene of the unfinished mural, at the junction of Carlingford Street and Ardenvohr Street, to apprehend those responsible.

A PSNI spokesman would only say: "Police are aware of a mural being painted on a wall in the area of Carlingford Street in east Belfast. "An investigation into the incident is ongoing."

The unfinished mural features two masked men and images of the Maze prison.

Its appearance comes just weeks after the completion of another new paramilitary mural at Inverwood Court, which replaced one of football legend George Best.

A person caught painting a mural without permission can be charged with causing criminal damage.

But the police spokesman last night said there had been no arrests in connection with either murals.
