As many as 70,000 expected at Derry's Turner exhibition

UP TO 70,000 people are expected to visit this year's Turner Prize exhibition in Derry.

It will be the first time the contemporary art exhibition has been staged outside England.

It will open at Ebrington Square on October 23 and run until January.

The winner of the prestigious award will be announced on December 2. a Turner gallery has been specially developed by Derry's Ilex urban regeneration company.

Sited in two combined former military buildings at the former Ebrington barracks, the refurbished facility includes four gallery spaces, an artists' film area and a cafe. Much of the character of the original military buildings has been retained including an underground Second World War air raid shelter, although this will not be open to the public.

Interim Ilex chairman Matt Mcnulty said the "creative hub" would be a fitting venue for the Turner Prize. "It is a significant achievement to have persuaded the Tate gallery to host the Turner prize in our city," he said.

Mr Mcnulty said the venue would be used for creative and digital industries after the exhibition ends. "These buildings will help promote entrepreneurship in the city," he said. admission to the exhibition will be free.
