Town celebrates first ordination in 25 years

OMAGH has celebrated its first ordination in a quarter of a century.

Deacon Brendan Collins, from Clanabogan, was raised to the priesthood in a ceremony on Sunday conducted by retired Auxiliary Bishop of Derry, Dr Francis Lagan.

A son of Brendan and Kathleen Collins, Rev Collins' ordination took place at the Church of the Sacred Heart.

It was the second in the Derry diocese this year. In June, Derry city native, Fr Micheal McGavigan was ordained by Coadjutor Archbishop of Armagh Eamon Martin.

Rev Collins trained for the priesthood in Belfast and at the Irish College in Rome. For the past 18 months, he has served as deacon in the parishes of Long Tower and St Eugene's in Derry city.
