Locked-in customers left terrified as bar attacked

DRINKERS at a central Belfast bar were left terrified last night after the pub came under attack. A loyalist mob charged the Sunflower Bar on Union Street, close to Smithfield, at around 7.30pm and smashed a window. Eyewitnesses said a crowd surged towards the bar, which is one of the last in the city to have kept a Troubles-era security cage. Terrified customers were locked inside as the crowd battered the window. Bar staff said they did not know who was behind the attack. Other bars in the area, including the Front Page, were forced to close early as loyalists clashed with police on nearby Royal Avenue.
