Parades body will not review decision on republican march

THE Parades Commission will not review its decision to allow a restricted republican march in Co Tyrone. The DUP, Ulster Unionists and the organisers of the controversial Castlederg parade - the Tyrone Volunteers Commemoration - had asked the parading watchdog to review its ruling.

However, a commission spokesman said yesterday the watchdog felt there were insufficient grounds to carry out a review. "As standard practice, the commission may review any determination - but only if there is fresh information to consider," he said. The parade through Castlederg in west Tyrone will be held on Sunday.

The commemoration will mark the 40th anniversary of the deaths of IRA men Seamus Harvey and Gerard McGlynn, who died when the car bomb they were transporting exploded prematurely. The Parades Commission has forbidden the parade, which has sparked angry unionist reaction, to pass through the town's central Diamond area so that it avoids a war memorial. A protest against the march will also take place on the same day.
