Compensation proposals

THE Irish government is expected to publish a report on a redress scheme for women held in the Republic's Magdalene laundries tomorrow. The cabinet is expected to consider the report prepared by former High Court judge Mr Justice John Quirke. It has been suggested that a compensation scheme for hundreds of survivors could cost up to €50m. However, four orders of nuns responsible for running the institutions are expected contribute towards compensating the women, most of whom are elderly.
