Husband and wife to stand trial over murder

A HUSBAND and wife will stand trial jointly charged with the murder of a man shot dead in Belfast, a judge ruled yesterday.

Charles and Julie Ann Valliday are accused over the gun attack on Christopher Mackin, pictured, in March last year.

Charles Valliday's brother James Valliday is also to be prosecuted for a separate offence of assisting offenders involved in the killing.

Mr Mackin (31) was shot up to seven times at College Square North.

His relatives packed Belfast Magistrates Court yesterday for preliminary enquiry proceedings against the three accused.

A prosecution lawyer submitted that all three have a case to answer.

District Judge Fiona Bagnall backed that assessment and ordered the defendants to be returned for trial at Belfast Crown Court.

Charles Valliday (41) of Powerscourt Place, Belfast, was bailed to live in Antrim.

His 36-year-old wife will continue to live at an address in Belfast until the trial gets under way on a date to be fixed.

James Valliday (47), of Springfield Road, was also bailed.

Conditions imposed on the accused include curfews, electronic monitoring and the surrender of their passports.
