Three thrown overboard as yacht hits tidal turbine

TWO adults and a child were thrown overboard when their yacht crashed into a tidal turbine in Strangford Lough yesterday.

The vessel hit the SeaGen turbine at around 11am.

Another boat sailed to the rescue and its crew plucked the people from the water.

Witnesses said the mast had been torn from the yacht and people onboard had been thrown into the water.

There were no reports of serious injuries.

It is understood the child was taken to hospital to be assessed for the effects of being in cold water.

Portaferry lifeboat went to the scene and the damaged yacht was towed away.

Meanwhile, five people were rescued after a boat in which they were travelling got into difficulties off the north Antrim coast.

The Red Bay RNLI crew rushed to the stricken vessel just after 1am on Saturday and found two crew members suffering from the effects of cold.

The other three of the crew had been rescued earlier that evening by Stranraer coast-guard after they got lost on their jetski during a trip to Campbeltown - ending up some 30 miles away.

The vessel towing the jetski back to Ballycastle ran out of fuel two miles off the coast of Cushendun.

Paddy McLaughlin of Red Bay lifeboat said: "The crew onboard this vessel were quite a distance offshore when they found themselves in difficulty in the early hours of this morning.

"Once on scene we observed two men who had been rescued by our colleagues in Stranraer RNLI earlier."

It was the second call-out for Red Bay RNLI in 12 hours.

The lifeboat was also launched on Friday evening to bring a man who got into difficulty on his jetski to safety.
