Coaker attends GAA fixture

SHADOW Northern Ireland secretary, Vernon Coaker was an unexpected visitor at Celtic Park for Derry and Down's opening Ulster Championship game.

The Labour politician, pictured, was a first time GAA spectator for what turned out to be a thrilling game when Down came from behind to defeat the home county.

Mr Coaker and his wife, Jackie took time out to watch the game during a weekend trip to Derry as guests of SDLP MP Mark Durkan.

Following the game, they met GAA officials.

Mr Durkan said the couple were impressed with the welcome they received wherever they went.

"We were able to meet with some of the events-shapers for the city of culture year and were impressed by their achievements and plans. I know that those whom we met were equally impressed by his interest and insight," Mr Durkan said.

Mr Durkan said both Mr Coaker and his wife spoke of the beauty and vibrancy of Derry.
