Hurling League Format for 2008
By Kenny Archer
The format for 2008 is fairly simple, geared towards condensing the two six-team Divisions 1A and 1B into an eight-team Division One next year.
The top four teams from both groups will go into that new top flight. Scoring difference will be used to determine all finishing positions in the tables. In the event that counties finish equal on score difference, the highest score for will be used to determine position in the table.
In the event that teams are still equal, the result of the game between the relevant counties shall be used to decide their placings.
As for the knockout stages, the two first place finishers in Divisions 1A and 1B will go straight through to the semi-finals.
There they will meet the winners of quarter-finals between the runner-up in 1A and the third-placed team in 1B, and vice versa.

Antrim’s most important match of the season may be tomorrow at Parnell Park against Dublin – but their Walsh Cup opener against Kilkenny wasn’t far behind on the priority list. Had the Saffrons lost in Freshford, their League preparations would have been harmed. Instead, after further victories over a strong UCD side and Offaly in the final, Antrim head into the Division 1A campaign with boosted confidence.

Laois would not have been in the planned nine-team Division One: they complained because they did not go up automatically as Division Two winners, but lost the play-off against Limerick. They may wish they’d kept quiet because they will definitely go down to the new Division Two for 2009, although they will at least get some good preparation for the Leinster Championship.
