Artificial intelligence is continuing to reshape the way we work and now it looks like newsreaders could be next to notice the change.

AI anchors, revealed by China’s state-run press agency Xinhua and search engine company Sogou, can present the headlines to viewers in English and Chinese 24 hours a day.

Xinhua reports that its approach simply requires an editor to enter text into the system and the AI newscasters will take control of presenting.

The AI anchors are based on real presenters at the organisation, with the system controlling their voice, lip movements and expressions to deliver the news.

“The development of the media industry calls for continuous innovation and deep integration with the international advanced technologies,” the AI anchor said.

“I’ll work tirelessly to keep you informed as texts will be typed into my system uninterrupted. I look forward to bringing you the brand new news experiences.”

The company said the aim of introducing AI anchors is to reduce news production costs and enable it to create quick videos during breaking news.
