Microsoft has announced a new addition to its Surface tablet line-up – the smaller, more portable Surface Go.
The technology giant said the new device, which will cost £380, has been designed to be its “smallest, lightest and most affordable Surface yet”.
The Surface product family already includes the Surface Studio desktop PC, as well as the Book and Laptop devices and the Surface Pro hybrid tablet.
Microsoft chief product officer Panos Panay said the Surface Go is intended to be a more accessible way to get hold of the Surface’s premium features.
The new 10in (25.4cm) device comes with the signature Surface kickstand for setting the device up at a range of angles, and runs Windows 10.
To those familiar with Surface design, the Go looks like a smaller version of the Surface Pro 3 that has been around since 2014, but with slightly more rounded corners, and now also comes with a USB-C port for the first time.
It is not as powerful as the larger Surface Pro, but will offer up to nine hours of battery life, Microsoft said.
Microsoft confirmed the new device will go on sale in the UK on August 2.
“Many of us play different roles throughout the day, moving from work or school to home and everywhere in between. Our team designs every Surface to adapt to that dynamic lifestyle, to strike a balance between performance and versatility, form and function,” said Mr Panay.
“Our products don’t do just one thing because people don’t do just one thing.
“When we designed this device, we had to ask ourselves what people want and need from a 10″ Surface. The answers seem obvious – lightweight, productive, and accessible to more people. I’m pumped to introduce you to Surface Go, because it’s all those things, and so much more.”
