Users of the ride-hailing app Lyft in Las Vegas can now choose to take an autonomous vehicle from some high-demand locations in the US city.
A fleet of 30 driverless cars have been added to the Lyft network in the city, having been developed by automotive tech firm Aptiv, using their driverless car platform.
From today the vehicles will be available to users who opt-in to receive one of the self-driving vehicles, which will still be operated by a safety driver.
The technology was first tested during a trial during tech show CES in the city in January. That initial pilot saw more than 400 self-driving journeys take place, and according to Aptiv produced an average customer rating of 4.99 stars out of five.
Aptiv and Lyft have not confirmed the specific locations where the autonomous vehicles will be accessible from, but did say it includes routes on the famous city Strip.
The firm’s chief executive Kevin Clark said: “With Aptiv’s autonomous driving technology deployed throughout Las Vegas and broadly accessible through the Lyft app, a wide range of consumers will be able to share the experience of autonomous vehicles in a complex urban environment.
“More importantly, the resulting knowledge and data will allow us to further refine our autonomous driving capabilities and strengthen our portfolio of industry-leading active safety solutions.”
