Amazon has been granted a patent for a smart mirror that uses mixed reality technology to virtually overlay clothes on to users.

The patent describes a mirror that uses “blended reality” which combines what is reflected by the mirror with images transmitted by a screen behind it.

The entire system will use cameras, projectors and lighting to create mixed reality images that could show what items of clothing look like on you without being in a store to try them on.

The display behind the mirror can be used to project different backgrounds, so users could “test” a digital outfit in a range of virtual settings.

It may sound outlandish, but Amazon is far from a newcomer to the digital fashion space.

Last year in the US the company launched a fashion centre version of its Amazon Echo smart hub called Look – a camera which took photos of users before using artificial intelligence to offer fashion advice on the outfit pictured.

The patent for a smart mirror appears in theory to be an extension of this technology, adding in the ever growing technological trend of mixed reality.

However, as always with patents, it is worth noting that just because Amazon has filed the documents, it does not mean a definitive product is in the works.
