Super Mario Odyssey has become the quickest selling Super Mario game ever in Europe, amid selling more than two million copies globally in its first weekend.
The game is the first major new Mario game for the new Nintendo Switch console, which launched earlier this year.
The record-breaking release means Odyssey has outperformed the launch weekend sales of Super Mario Galaxy 2, which came out in 2010.
Odyssey sees Mario jump into a range of 3D worlds along with new companion Cappy as they head off in pursuit of Bowser, who has kidnapped Princess Peach.
The game has received rave reviews across the board, following in the Switch hardware’s footsteps, as well as that of flagship launch title The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild.
As a result, Nintendo can now look back on a hugely successful 2017 in which the Japanese firm has successfully stood out from industry heavyweights PlayStation and Xbox, thanks to the home/mobile accessibility of the Switch and now its growing formidable gaming line-up.
