Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg has warned the social network’s profits will be hit by increased investment in cyber security.

In its latest quarterly financial results, the technology giant reported a 47% increase in revenue on the same period last year.

But Zuckerberg said the social media site was determined to tackle abuse on its platforms – something the company has been criticised for previously.

“Our community continues to grow and our business is doing well,” he said.

“But none of that matters if our services are used in ways that don’t bring people closer together.

“We’re serious about preventing abuse on our platforms. We’re investing so much in security that it will impact our profitability. Protecting our community is more important than maximising our profits.”

Total revenue was up to more than 10.3 billion dollars (£7.7 billion), Facebook said.

The company’s latest financial report revealed the social network now had 2.07 billion monthly active users, 1.37 billion of which access the platform every day.

The results come in the wake of Facebook’s appearance before the US Congress, alongside Twitter and Google, where the tech firms were scrutinised over policing content.

US politicians are investigating the possible use of the platforms by Russian-linked accounts to spread propaganda.
