Wild west sequel Red Dead Redemption 2 has been pushed back until spring 2018, with developer Rockstar Games announcing it needs more time to perfect the much-anticipated open world title.

The game, the third in the Red Dead series set in the old American West, was first announced late last year and originally pencilled for release this autumn.

But in a statement posted to its website, Rockstar said more time was needed to get the game right.

“This outlaw epic set across the vast and unforgiving American heartland will be the first Rockstar game created from the ground up for the latest generation of console hardware, and some extra time is necessary to ensure that we can deliver the best experience possible for our fans,” the company said.

“We are very sorry for any disappointment this delay causes, but we are firm believers in delivering a game only when it is ready. We are really excited to bring you more details about the game this summer.”

By way of a peace offering, Rockstar signed off the message with a selection of new screenshots from the game to give fans a taste of what is to come.

More information on the game is expected to be announced at E3 – the huge annual gaming show – in Los Angeles next month, where it’s expected to be discussed during PlayStation’s press conference.
