Apple has filed a patent for technology that can turn your iPhone into a laptop.

It seems the United States Patent and Trademark Office has approved a patent which shows an iPhone slotting into the body of a laptop-like device.

The patent was filed last year, around the time Apple released its iPhone 7 range, but has only recently been unearthed by Apple Insider.

Dubbed the Electronic Accessory Device, the technology turns the iPhone screen into a trackpad and is essentially powered by the phone.

According to the patent application, the laptop-like device would contain “operational components and a communication port that facilitates formation of a communication channel between the host device and at least one of the operational components where the host device provides substantially all processing resources and has full access to the at least one operational component”.

The accessory device would only function when someone places a phone into the docking station.

The patent adds: “The accessory device, however, can provide auxiliary processing resources, such a graphical processing unit, or GPU, or other processing resources that can support the functions of the portable computing device.”

However, just because Apple has a patent, it does not mean that the company will make the product.

But you never know, something like this might actually catch on.
