Samsung has revealed its plans to turn the “black void” of your TV on standby into an active piece of art at the centre of your home.
The technology giant’s Frame concept is based around the idea that for the majority of the day the TV is dead space, and so The Frame enables users to turn it into a picture frame – showcasing pieces of art on screen, as though they were real pieces hung in the room.
Users are also able to upload their own photos for display.
The concept screen also houses a range of power-saving sensors and brightness tools that automatically adjust it depending on light conditions in the room, as well as using motion detectors to switch it off when you leave the room.
Those sensors are also able to detect height, and so won’t be activated by your pets, Samsung says.
To further emphasise the artistic nature of the design, The Frame even comes with an easel stand option, as well as the more traditional wall mount set-up.
Though currently still a concept with no set release date for consumers, The Frame also contains several hints of future technology the Korean firm is working on, including its Near-Invisible Connection, an almost transparent fibre optic cable designed to remove messy wires from view.
Samsung also says it plans to build a platform for The Frame – an app store for artwork based on collaborations Samsung plans to enter into with galleries and museums around the world to give access to their work to users.
The aim is to have an app in place where users can choose between their own images and various art collections to display on the Frame’s screen.
Not only that, Samsung has suggested it has plans to create custom frames from the display – the bezel – including a white version which users can then customise themselves.
But before you start to pine for it too much, The Frame remains a concept for now with a European launch date of “a few months” and no price has yet been announced.
