Edible straws could be round the corner thanks to this innovative crowdfund campaign

Lolistraws turn to compost in 60 days.

A crowdfunding initiative is hoping to replace plastic straws with alternatives made from seaweed.

Lolistraws are edible, marine degradable and can be used as compost, and their inventors are hoping they will replace some of the 500m single-use plastic straws the US uses every day.

They can be be naturally flavoured too, to pair them with your drink of choice and are calorie free. The flavours on offer include rose, mango, yuzu, vanilla and more.

This isn’t the first venture of this kind for the makers of Lolistraw. Loliware’s edible cups are already on sale after a successful pitch on the US version of Dragon’s Den, Shark Tank.

Co-founders of Loliware, Chelsea Briganti and Leigh Ann Tucker hope to ship the edible straws by summer 2018, providing the crowdfunding on Kickstarter drive meets the £22,452 goal. It is currently £10,396 funded, with 19 days to go.
