Lewis Capaldi fends off competition from viral rapper Lil Nas X on singles chart
Lil Nas X has failed to unseat Lewis Capaldi from the top of the UK singles chart after launching a challenge with his viral hit Old Town Road.
The track by the Atlanta-born rapper became an internet sensation thanks to the Yeehaw Challenge, in which people filmed themselves transforming into cowboys.
The trend, in the vein of the mannequin challenge or the Harlem Shake, catapulted the track from number 37 to number two.
But Capaldi’s Someone You Loved claimed its seventh week at the top with 69,000 combined sales including over eight million streams, according to the Official Charts Company.
He now has the third longest-running number one single for a Scottish act behind Wet Wet Wet’s Love Is All Around with 15 weeks and Calvin Harris’s One Kiss ft Dua Lipa with eight weeks.
Production trio Meduza took number five with Piece Of Your Heart ft Goodboys while Khalid’s Talk rose seven places to number nine.
The Jonas Brothers’ second release since their comeback, Cool, entered at 39 but is expected to climb.
On the albums chart Billie Eilish continued her swift ascent to stardom as she fought off competition from Khalid to score her second week at the top.
The Los Angeles-raised 17-year-old last week became the youngest female solo act to claim the top spot with her debut, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
Texan singer-songwriter Khalid’s sophomore album Free Spirit entered at number two but failed to topple her.
Rapper J Hus’ debut album Common Sense returned to the charts after his surprise appearance on stage during Drake’s recent gig at the O2 in London.
The album climbed 71 places to number 23 four months after J Hus was jailed for carrying a knife.
