Writer of Vanity Fair TV adaptation reveals cameo surprise

The writer of ITV’s adaptation of Vanity Fair has revealed she makes a cameo in the upcoming series – her first in her 40-year career.

Gwyneth Hughes is also one of the executive producers on the seven-part drama which is based on William Makepeace Thackeray’s book of the same name.

Hughes, known for her work on 2007’s BBC drama Five Days, was speaking following a screening of the first episode at the Edinburgh Television Festival.

She said: “I’ve never been an extra and I’ll never do it again, it’s so boring. It was really cold, rainy and awful.”

The series stars Olivia Cooke as Becky Sharp and Line Of Duty’s Claudia Jessie as Amelia Sedley. It also features a host of big name stars including Suranne Jones, Martin Clunes and Michael Palin, who stars as Thackeray himself.

Jessie has said she is still overwhelmed at having landed the part.

The first episode will air on Sunday September 2 at 9pm, followed by the second episode on Monday September 3, with episodes three to seven airing on consecutive Sundays thereafter.
