Rapper Professor Green has spoken for the first time about when he and a former partner decided to have an abortion after discovering she was pregnant.

Green, whose real name is Stephen Manderson, revealed that he still feels regret over the decision, which he and the woman involved took many years ago.

The 34-year-old said in an interview with The Sun on Sunday’s Fabulous supplement: “It’s a sad story.

“We decided to have an abortion because we didn’t want our child to go through the same stresses we went through growing up.

“When actually it wouldn’t have because it would have had both of us.

“But we didn’t tell anyone, and almost as soon as we’d done it we realised we regretted it.

“It stuck with me for a long time afterwards and it still hurts now.

“It probably wasn’t the right thing or the right time. But I do still think about it.

“It’s so important people talk about stuff, because that was a decision borne of us talking to each other but no one else.”

As well as selling more than three million records, Green has also presented several documentaries and is a patron for mental health charity Calm.

He was previously married to Made In Chelsea star Millie Mackintosh before the pair divorced in 2016 after two-and-a-half years.

In May, Green appeared to refer to their relationship as a “bloody mistake” in a lengthy Instagram post, which has since been removed, in which he voiced his frustration at being associated with Mackintosh instead of his work.

Green said he has not ruled out getting married again and having children in the future.

He said: “I think there’s something more sincere about having kids. I’m 34 and I’ve not had a child, and that’s not by mistake.

“That’s because I’ve never been with someone who I could see becoming the mother of my children, which is quite sad.

“I’ve seen through breaking up with a few people how malicious they’ve become, and I’ve been very grateful there hadn’t been children.”

The rapper split from his partner of 18 months, model Fae Williams, in April.
