Simon Thomas: I still can't comprehend death of wife Gemma
TV presenter Simon Thomas has shared a moving tribute to his wife one month after she died.
The former Blue Peter host vowed the “darkness will not overcome me” in a moving post on Instagram.
He shared a photograph of his eight-year-old son Ethan kissing Gemma, who died in November just three days after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.
He wrote: “Four weeks ago today Gemma entered her final hour. Four long weeks. Four pain-filled weeks. Four life changing weeks and yet I still can’t comprehend that she’s gone.
“I have that eternal hope, but right now it just hurts. It hurts so much, but the darkness will not overcome me.”
Thomas has also launched a fundraising page for charity Maggie’s Centres who offer support to those affected by cancer.
Thomas, now a presenter on Sky Sports, announced the death of 40-year-old Gemma via social media on November 26.
He said she died “surrounded by her family and friends” and Ethan was “in bits”.
Footballers, including Leicester striker Jamie Vardy and England women’s captain Steph Houghton, replied to the post offering their sympathy while Norwich, the team Thomas supports, extended their thoughts to the presenter and his family.
There were also words of comfort from fellow presenters Dan Walker and Rachel Riley.
Acute myeloid leukaemia is a type of blood cancer that affects the bone marrow.
