Doctor Who fans could barely contain their excitement as the show unveiled a sneak peek at the Christmas special.

A one-minute clip from Twice Upon A Time was posted on the BBC programme’s official Twitter account on Sunday.

The episode marks Peter Capaldi’s final outing as the 12th Doctor before he hands over the role to Jodie Whittaker.

It sees him meet up with the First Doctor (David Bradley) and embark on a mission alongside a World War One captain (Mark Gatiss) and assistant Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie).

The clip shows the group leaping off the Tardis into the snow, as the ship is towed off into the distance by something overhead.

They stand around unsure of what to do, and the 12th Doctor says: “They’ve got my Tardis. Over to you Mary Berry.”

The First Doctor leads them to his own Tardis, and Bill asks: “Doctor, is that another Tardis?”

“No, it’s another of the same Tardis,” he replies, as they get in and head off to “deep space, anywhere”.

Fans of the sci-fi series were delighted to see the trailer.

“OMG!!! I CANNOT WAIT FOR CHRISTMAS!!!!” posted one person on Twitter.

Another said: “Stop with the teases already… I honestly cannot wait until it’s christmas day!!”
