Sam Smith’s second album is poised to hit number one in the charts, following in the footsteps of his successful debut.

The 25-year-old singer-songwriter’s The Thrill Of It All has sold just over 60,000 units across all formats – including physical, download and streaming equivalent sales – since its release three days ago, and is leading the charge to take the charts top spot this Friday.

Smith’s record is 40,000 units ahead of its closest competitor, Roy Orbison’s A Love So Beautiful, according to the Official Charts Company.

Smith’s debut album, In The Lonely Hour,  went straight in at number one in 2014, having sold 102,000 copies in the first week, and it went on to spend eight non-consecutive weeks at the top.

The Thrill Of It All’s projected success comes after the album’s lead single, Too Good At Goodbyes, topped the singles chart in September.

In The Lonely Hour also looks set to return to the top 20 in the Official Albums Chart this week, and is currently at number 19.

The new Orbison album, a reworking of his classic hits with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, is poised to debut at number two this week.

Last week’s number one, Together Again by Michael Ball and Alfie Boe, is at number three, George Michael’s Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 is likely to be a non-mover at number four and Pink’s Beautiful Trauma rounds off the midweek top five.

Over on the Official Singles Chart, last week’s chart-topper, Camila Cabello, could retain her top spot for a second week with Havana.

Rockstar by Post Malone featuring 21 Savage is unmoved at number two, while Smith’s Too Good At Goodbyes has climbed from seven to number three following the release of his album.

Rita Ora has also seen a hike, with her track Anywhere climbing from number 11 to number four at the midweek stage, while Marshmello and Khalid’s Silence is at number five.
