EastEnders fans are in despair after it was finally revealed that it was Johnny Carter who was shot by Ted Murray in the aftermath of this week’s explosion.

Ted (Christopher Timothy) opened fire on unsuspecting Johnny (Ted Reilly) when he came to the door in Tuesday’s episode, but the credits rolled before viewers could see who the victim was.

But as Thursday night’s show caught up with the disarray on Albert Square, Johnny lay unconscious and bleeding on the floor.

While viewers already had their suspicions, some were horrified to see the young Carter fighting for his life.

One posted on Twitter: “Nooooo Johnny can’t die! He’s so cute and adorable.”

Another similarly added: “#Eastenders Johnny is far too nice to die… I swear to god he better live!”

But the drama reached new levels as Johnny’s mother, Linda, arrived on the scene to find her son being taken out to an ambulance and Ted’s wife Joyce (Maggie Steed) being arrested after covering for her confused husband’s actions.

Meanwhile, Jane Beale still struggled to fight her way out of the blazing cafe where she had been left by vengeful stepson Steven.

As Abi Branning (Lorna Fitzgerald) arrived, she was struck on the head and pinned to the floor as the building began to collapse.

But after Abi was revived and taken away by paramedics, the episode closed on another climatic note when a lorry crashed into one of the ambulances, knocking it onto its side.

Freshly baffled by whose life could be at risk once more – Johnny or Abi – one panicking viewer commented: “All the number plates on the ambulances are different… So who’s ambulance crashed?! #EastEnders”

EastEnders continues on BBC 1 at 8pm on Friday.
