Groening said the series would be about “life and death, love and sex and and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you”.

Fielding and Berry, who played Vince Noir and Dixon Bainbridge respectively in The Mighty Boosh, will also be joined by Rich Fulcher who was Bob Fossil in the cult BBC Three series.

Disenchantment, set in the medieval kingdom of Dreamland, will star Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson as the voice of a hard-drinking princess named Bean.

Nat Faxon will voice her elf friend Elfo and comedian Eric Andre will portray her demon Luci.

Netflix has ordered 20 episodes of the show, with the first 10 being aired next year.

Groening will be an executive producer alongside Josh Weinstein, who worked with him on The Simpsons, as well as Futurama.

Cindy Holland, a Netflix vice president, said: “Matt Groening’s brilliant work has resonated with generations around the world and we couldn’t be happier to work with him on Disenchantment.

“The series will bear his trademark animation style and biting wit, and we think it’s a perfect fit for our many Netflix animation fans.”
