Hugh Skinner has said he feels sorry for the Duke of Cambridge, who he portrays on comedy television series The Windsors.

The actor, who is back as William when the programme returns to Channel 4 on Wednesday night for a second series, said he thinks it must be strange to be a member of the British monarchy.

He said: “I don’t think you can have any actual idea of what the Royal Family are really like from how they are portrayed in the papers.

“If anything, I feel sorry for them because it must be an odd position to be in.

“I know they have been in that position their whole life but it’s an odd one.”

Skinner started playing the Prince when the parody series was launched last year and said he initially did some research to get into character.

“I did to begin with because I think there’s a specific type of Received Pronunciation that I think he and Kate have,” he said.

“So I watched some footage of him for that, mainly because he is one of the most readily available people to find videos of online.”

The Windsors also stars Louise Ford as the Duchess of Cambridge, Harry Enfield as the Prince of Wales, Haydn Gwynne as the Duchess of Cornwall and Richard Goulding as Prince Harry.

The second series will see Prince Harry introduce his family to his American girlfriend Meghan Markle, played by British actress Kathryn Drysdale.
