The Voice Kids has got off to a good start in the ratings, launching to an audience of 4.2 million viewers.

The first episode of the junior version of the ITV talent contest peaked at 4.6 million when it aired on Saturday night.

Judged by Will.i.am, Pixie Lott and McFly’s Danny Jones, the opening instalment featured a 12-year-old girl influenced by James Brown and Janis Joplin, a rendition of a Disney classic from The Little Mermaid and a tiny rapper.

It won rave reviews from viewers and a 24% share of viewing to become the second highest rating programme of the day on any channel.It was only behind the World Cup Qualifier Live between Scotland and England, which had an average audience of 4.7 million viewers and a 32% share across the coverage.

On BBC1, Doctor Who was watched by 3.6 million viewers, peaking at 3.8 million.

The sci-fi series enjoyed a 20.6% share of the audience.
