Sir Michael Caine has explained why he voted for Brexit, saying he would “rather be a poor master than a rich servant”.

The Batman Begins star, who features in forthcoming comedy Going In Style with Morgan Freeman, told Sky News that he thought Britain leaving the European Union would turn out to be “all right” in the end.

He said: “I voted for Brexit.

“I look at it in the final thing, and I’ll tell you what it is with me is I’d rather be a poor master than a rich servant.

“It wasn’t about the racism, immigrants or anything, it was about freedom.”

Sir Michael added: “You know, politics is always chaotic because in politics you’re always going in new areas where you’ve never been before and so you’re going to get lost and then you’re going to find your way and then it’ll be all right.”

Before the EU referendum, Sir Michael had spoken to the BBC’s Nick Robinson about his preference for leaving.

He said: “To me, I think what you have in Europe is a government-by-proxy of everybody who has now got carried away.

“I think that, unless there are some extremely significant changes we should get out.

“I feel certain we should come out.”
