World Rubik's Cube Championship heats up in Paris

Competitors met to hold mini tournaments and develop solving strategies.

Competitors have been battling it out at the World Rubik’s Cube Championship in Paris, as the tournament reached its penultimate day.

Every year, hundreds of members of the Rubik’s Cube community come together to hold competitions and to develop new solving methods for the classic puzzle, invented in 1974 by Hungarian architect Erno Rubik.

The colourful cube holds a staggering 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 (43 quintillion) combinations, and has gained thousands of new fans each year despite first appearing on shop shelves more than 40 years ago.

The official Rubik’s Cube website states that more than 350 million Rubik’s Cubes have been sold, making the fiendish little device the world’s most popular toy of all time.
