Actress Charlotte Ritchie went for a whole day without eating while filming the series finale of Call The Midwife because she was scared of ruining her character’s wedding dress.

Charlotte’s character Nurse Barbara Gilbert married the Rev Tom Hereward, played by Jack Ashton, in Sunday night’s episode while wearing a full-length white gown with a fur-trimmed hooded cape.

The 27-year-old, who admitted being “quite clumsy”, said the entire day of filming left her nervous and has prompted her to shun white on her own wedding day.

She told the Daily Mirror: “People from costume were hovering because I’m known to be quite clumsy.

“I was too scared to eat a single thing all day. The dress wouldn’t have been salvageable if I’d dropped anything on it.

“I wore a bib to drink tea and took it off any opportunity I could.”

She added: “It was a real note to self about if I ever get married to not have a white wedding dress. It was the most nerve-racking thing.”

Nurse Barbara and Tom tied the knot in a last-minute wedding due to an unfortunate turn of events.

The characters became engaged during the 2016 Christmas special, but had to prepare for their wedding in just three weeks in order to have Nurse Barbara’s vicar father conduct the ceremony before his missionary posting.
