A Nasa spacecraft has taken photographs of one of Saturn’s moons, Pan, and it’s fair to say the rock looks pretty odd.

Obviously it doesn’t matter what moons look like, it’s the gravitational pull that counts, but this moon is really weird.

It just doesn’t look like a moon.

Our own moon is so round, and perfect.

Whereas this moon is knobbly and weird.

It’s even bulging at the middle like it’s had a big meal, while our moon is svelte and lovely.

According to Carolyn Porco, the head of the spacecraft’s imaging system, the shape is down to an “accretionary equatorial bulge”, meaning material from Saturn’s ring that’s collected at the moon’s equator over time.

Less scientifically, people have been pointing out that Pan’s shape makes it bizarrely reminiscent of certain foods.

The pictures were taken just 15,000 miles away from Pan by Nasa’s Cassini craft.Cassini has been in space since 1997, taking pictures of Venus, Jupiter and Saturn. Its mission will end this September when it’s scheduled to plunge into Saturn’s atmosphere and get destroyed by rocketing pressure and temperature.
