Mike Pence is reportedly embroiled in his own email scandal
Chants of “Lock her up!” and talk of Hillary Clinton’s damaging leaked emails were a common theme in Donald Trump’s election campaign. But now, his own vice president could be involved in a scandal that’s not hugely dissimilar.
A new report from the Indy Star alleges that Mike Pence “routinely used a private email account to conduct public business as governor of Indiana, at times discussing sensitive matters and homeland security issues”.
The Indy Star placed a public records request and said it discovered emails showing that Pence communicated using his private AOL account with top advisers on key governmental issues. The news site reports that “in one email, Pence’s top state homeland security adviser relayed an update from the FBI regarding the arrests of several men on terror-related charges”.
This has raised a whole host of security concerns – particularly as Pence’s personal account was hacked just last summer.
Pence’s office in Washington has denied wrongdoing in a statement: “Similar to previous governors, during his time as governor of Indiana, Mike Pence maintained a state email account and a personal email account. As governor, Mr Pence fully complied with Indiana law regarding email use and retention.
“Government emails involving his state and personal accounts are being archived by the state consistent with Indiana law, and are being managed according to Indiana’s Access to Public Records Act.”
Considering how Trump’s campaign strongly criticised Clinton, the irony is not lost on many.
But some people just took the opportunity to make some amazingly terrible jokes.
Pence’s spokesman Marc Lotter has dismissed any comparisons between Pence and Clinton, “noting that Pence didn’t deal with federally classified information as governor”.
