It’s getting to that time of year when it’s totally acceptable to eat multiple hot cross buns slathered in butter.

And M&S has gone rogue with its flavour options this year – it’s released a savoury edition. A cheese and onion hot cross bun.

Before you ask, they look just like normal buns and, yes, still have sultanas in them.

They’re also made of two cheeses, onions, chives and spices, while the cross is flavoured with brewer’s paste (a blend of porcini, roasted garlic, molasses and Porter Ale, for anyone else wondering).

Apparently they’re delicious stuffed with bacon for a gourmet bacon butty. *thinks very hard about this*

So, are you willing to try these new hot cross buns?

Or are you erring on the side of caution, much like this Twitter user?

Well, there are also a few other, potentially less weird, flavours to spend your £1.70 on. Enter: carrot cake hot cross buns, filled with a cream cheese frosting.

It’s also vital not to forget previous (sweet) flavour combos the product developers have come up with – toffee fudge and Belgian chocolate, Kentish Bramley apple and cranberry, and orange editions. Let’s not panic, because you’ve got a while until Easter to try them all out… or of course, just stick to plain, old traditional hot cross buns. No one’s judging here.
