A new cafe will serve up meals prepared with donated food and charge customers – including the homeless – only what they can afford.

Matt’s Cafe in Swansea is dedicated to reducing food waste and is the first registered cafe in the city signed up to The Real Junk Food. The project works towards one objective: to use food that’s destined for waste to cook up delicious dishes, only charging people what they can afford for the meal.

The cafe is also determined to feed those who are low on funds – including the homeless – and provide opportunities for those who have found themselves unemployed for a long period of time.

Matt’s Cafe believes the “pay as you feel” concept will encourage people to consider the actual value of the meal they’re eating, as well as supporting those who may not be able to afford food from other restaurants.

Local shops in the area have signed up to donate spare and waste food which volunteers will collect on Sunday evenings to serve up the next day.

Matt’s Cafe is opening its doors to customers on February 27 and for its debut month, it’ll be open from 10am-4pm every Monday.

The cafe will be offering hot food and drinks, in addition to a number of pop-up services including a clothes stall and drug and alcohol advice for those who need it.
