Maybe you’re one of those people whose excitement for a holiday revolves around the thought of doing nothing. Hey, no judgment…

But while some of us are more than happy to take a break from any training regime we *may* have going on back home, four in 10 of us are now folding exercise into a trip, according to research conducted by Expedia.co.uk.

One reason to work out when away is to counter-balance all that holiday indulgence (hello, hotel buffet), according to 22% of people asked. But 23% said the reason is wanting to maintain an everyday fitness plan, while 10% of those quizzed said they just use exercise as a way of seeing more of their holiday location. Which is legit.

So, just as some fitness inspo, we thought we’d share a few dreamy Insta displays of joyously experiencing a new destination, while also exercising. Get those trainers in your case…

1. Seeing the sights on a walk

Through parks, along city streets, out in the countryside – the most common way to squeeze a bit of cardio into a trip is by walking. Obvs. If you’re at hostels, keep an eye out for free walking tours, or just grab a map and head out into the unknown.

2. Cycling merrily along

Other popular options for holiday fitness include bike rides – 13% of people say they squeeze cardio in this way. Most cities have fun cycling tours to go on – we particularly recommend doing this in Melbourne, FYI.

3. Heading out for a long, sweaty beach run

Eleven percent of people say they go on long runs while on holiday – which may not be for everyone, but there’s no denying you can take in some sweet views while doing so, especially if you dare to jog along the sand.

4. Planning a hike for crazy views

In the survey, 8% of people mentioned planned hikes being slotted into their trips – and when it comes to dreamy places like Sri Lanka, Bali and Canada, we’re sold on trying to do it ourselves.

5. Sunrise or sunset yoga

Whether you’re an early riser or prefer exercising in the evenings, yoga at the resort you’re staying in, or just doing some poses yourself, can be an incredible way to catch colourful skies … paddleboard yoga is also real fun, just sayin’.

See, maybe exercise really can be part of your desk holiday daydreaming.

For more inspo, Expedia has also launched Fitness Breaks Hub – bloggers around the world recommend perfect ways to fold exercise into travel, including spots for healthy eating and more ideas for clever fitness activities.

But make sure you enjoy that hotel buffet too and lazing on the sunlounger too, OK? You do you.
