Galleries and culture centres across England, including a football museum and a dairy, are to receive a £4 million funding boost, the Government has announced.

An array of projects will receive the financial injection to improve displays and facilities, including the ancient Egyptian gallery at Leicester’s Arts and Museum Service.

The National Football Museum in Manchester, which is to be granted more than £100,000, will use the funds to document the history of women’s football as part of a new collection.

The largest funding package will go to Weald and Downland Museum in Singleton, West Sussex, which will receive £224,500 to fund a bakery and dairy showcasing heritage food production.

London’s Victoria and Albert museum will receive £200,000 to aid with renovations.

A total of £150,000 will go to Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums for the first phase of a redevelopment plan of the Arbeia Roman fort in Tyneside.

In total, 39 museums, galleries and centres will receive funding with more than half of the money going to projects in London, the South East and the South West.

The grants are funded by the Wolfson Foundation and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

Minister for Digital and Culture, Matt Hancock, said the grants “will make an important contribution toward increasing access to their wonderful collections and improving the visitor experience at museums right across the country”.

Paul Ramsbottom, CEO of the Wolfson Foundation, said: “From Egyptian mummies in Leicester to a Roman fort on Tyneside, this is a gloriously diverse set of projects – but all demonstrate excellence and all will improve the visitor experience.”
