The last place you might expect to hear about Kiss A Ginger Day is the Houses of Parliament, but MP Chris Bryant actually brought it up with speaker John Bercow.

The Labour MP for Rhondda, who is a strawberry blonde himself, then continued with Commons business, but the room had already erupted into giggles.

“I’m sure you can look it up,” he told the speaker.

Another member can be heard in the background saying: “This is totally surreal”.

Kiss A Ginger day was reportedly created in 2009 by Derek Forgie, when he formed a Facebook group with some of his ginger friends as a “karmic counter-event” to the anti-ginger sentiment he’d noticed in popular culture.
