The next installment of the Star Wars saga is to be called The Last Jedi, it has been confirmed.

The film is the second in the latest Star Wars trilogy, following on from The Force Awakens which was released in 2015.

The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman and executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski.

Lucasfilm previously confirmed Princess Leia actress Carrie Fisher’s likeness will not be digitally recreated in new Star Wars movies.

The filmmakers denied rumours the actress's performance would be recreated for further instalments of the franchise, after it was reported the company was in negotiations with her estate.

Ms Fisher (60) died on December 27 after suffering a heart attack on board a flight from London to Los Angeles four days earlier.

Her mother, Singin’ In The Rain star Debbie Reynolds, died a day later at the age of 84.
