DEMI Moore says she is in "absolute shock" following the death of a young man in a pool at her Los Angeles home.

The actress, who was not at home at the time, described the death of the 21-year-old at a party hosted by her assistant as an "unthinkable tragedy".

The victim, Edenilson Valle, had gone missing for 10 or 15 minutes before his friends found him floating in the deep end of the pool on Sunday morning, said coroner's official Lieutenant Fred Corral.

He added that Mr Valle's friends and family confirmed he did not know how to swim.

Police went to the home on the 9000 block of Oak Pass Road in west Los Angeles after receiving a 911 call. A small crowd was around the man's body when police officers arrived.

Paramedics started CPR, but Mr Valle was pronounced dead at the scene at 5.30am.

Following the tragedy, Ms Moore released a statement in which she said she was "in absolute shock".

"I was out of the country travelling to meet my daughters for a birthday celebration when I got the devastating news," she said.

"The loss of a child is an unthinkable tragedy and my heart goes out to this young man's family and friends. I ask that you please respect the privacy of all concerned during this sensitive time."

Police are currently investigating Mr Valle's death, which they believe was an accident.
