Skoda Fabia takes a growth spurt

HERE'S a look at the new Skoda Fabia, which is due to go on sale in Northern Ireland later this year.

The Fabia has traditionally been one of the larger small cars, if that isn't a contradiction in terms, and this fourth-generation version is said by Skoda to be "the most spacious car" in its class.

It has grown by 11cm in length, to just over 4.1 metres, and a longer wheelbase means more room for passengers.

The boot is larger too, growing from the ample 330 litres of the current car to 380 litres; to put that in perspective, that's the same volume as a Volkswagen Golf, which is a size category above the Fabia.

Being a new model, there's the expected up-to-date infotainment system, digital screens and step up in safety kit and assistance aids.

Five petrol engines will be available from launch, with power outputs ranging from 64bhp to 148bhp. Four of the five engines when coupled with an optional 50-litre fuel tank can, according to Skoda, return up to 560 miles from a single fill-up.

Range-topping cars get a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine linked to a seven-speed DSG gearbox, while there's the option of a five-speed or six-speed manual across the rest of the engine line-up.

Prices and specifications will be announced closer to the car going on sale.
