VAUXHALL is on an SUV spree as it races to capitalise on the crossover trend.

The Mokka has already been upgraded and rebranded as the Mokka X, and an all-new - and, confusingly, similar-sized - Crossland X is imminent.

The third model, pitched against the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and Renault Kadjar, is this car, the Grandland X.

Vauxhall seems to have all the bases covered with this one: "With a sporty design and off-road looks, the Grandland X has elevated seating for five people, generous luggage space, good all-round visibility and a raft of safety technologies," it says.

We'll know more when we get to see it in the metal - it reaches showrooms in early 2018 - but there is reason to be optimistic.

The Mokka X might still be ho-hum, but the Astra and new Insignia models are fine cars; if the Grandland X is cast in their mould, then it could be rather good indeed.
