ITS Formula One team might be struggling, but McLaren's road car division is going from strength to strength.

The latest Ferrari-challenger from the British supercar builder is the 720S, which it promises to be "lighter, faster and even more dynamically capable" than its 650S predecessor.

Here are some of its highlights...

  • New, twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine produces 710bhp - or 720PS in Euro-land measurements, thus the name of the car - and a whopping 568lb.ft of torque.
  • Tipping the scales at less than 1,300kg, the 720S has an eye-popping power-to-weight ratio of 553bhp per tonne. Your diesel Volkswagen Golf makes do with about 70bhp/tonne...
  • Performance is bonkers. How does 0-60mph in 2.8 seconds and 0-124mph in 7.8 seconds sound? Top speed is 212mph.
  • There's little point in being able to go fast if you can't stop just as fast. Thankfully the 720S can decelerate even faster than it accelerates, going from 124mph to a standstill in an internal organ-rearranging 4.6 seconds. In that length of time it covers 117 metres.
  • Every McLaren road car has featured a carbon fibre chassis, and the 720S is no different. The car's carbon 'tub' is extremely strong and rigid. Aluminium alloys are also used in the chassis and for some body panels.
  • The first cars will reach their lucky owners in May. Prices start at £208,600.
